Sonic Generations

Sega's Answer to Mario

Sonic the Hedgehog launched on the Sega Mega Drive in June 1991, created by Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara. His attitude, speed, and cool factor were a direct challenge to Nintendo's Mario — and it worked. Sonic sold the Mega Drive and made Sega a household name.

The classic 2D trilogy (Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles) remains the high point for many fans. Sonic Mania (2017) returned to those roots and was universally praised as the best Sonic game in decades.

The Sonic Franchise — Era by Era

From Mega Drive legend to modern revival — the key chapters in Sonic's history:

Classic Era (1991–1994)

Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles, CD. The definitive 2D platformers. Blazing speed, memorable music, and iconic level design.

Saturn / Early 3D (1996–1998)

Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic R. Transitional titles as Sega struggled to bring Sonic into 3D. Divisive but historically interesting.

Dreamcast Era (1998–2001)

Sonic Adventure 1 & 2. The first successful 3D Sonic games. Adventure 2's "Live and Learn" is still a fan favourite.

GameCube / PS2 Era (2001–2006)

Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Riders. Experimental and uneven — but Heroes has a devoted following.

Boost Era (2008–2014)

Sonic Unleashed, Colours, Generations. The boost formula refined the 3D gameplay. Generations is widely considered the best 3D Sonic.

Modern Revival (2017–)

Sonic Mania (a love letter to the classics), Sonic Forces, Sonic Frontiers. The franchise finding its footing again after years of inconsistency.

Frequently Asked Questions — Sonic

What is the best Sonic game to start with?

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Mega Drive) is the classic starting point — tight level design, great music, and the introduction of Tails. For modern players, Sonic Mania (Switch/PS4/Xbox One) is the best Sonic game in decades and perfect for newcomers and veterans alike.

Are the Mega Drive Sonic games worth collecting?

Absolutely. Sonic 1, 2, and 3 & Knuckles are among the most sought-after Mega Drive cartridges. Complete-in-box copies command a premium. The lock-on cartridge for Sonic & Knuckles is particularly collectible.

What's the difference between Sonic 3 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles?

Sonic 3 was released as a standalone game, but was designed to be played with the Sonic & Knuckles lock-on cartridge. When combined, you get the full intended experience with all levels, both endings, and the ability to play as Knuckles in Sonic 3's stages.

Which Sonic games are on modern platforms?

Sonic Origins (Switch/PS4/Xbox/PC) includes Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles, and CD remastered. Sonic Mania is available on all modern platforms. Sonic Generations and Colours Ultimate are also available digitally.
